NEWSLETTER   March 2021

www.toffsgolf.com

Now that we can emerge from our golfing hibernation, this Newsletter seeks to advise you of the activities being set up by the Toffs as we proceed, hopefully, towards normality.  The arrangements being made by our Club to ensure our safe return in in accordance with England Golf guidelines are thorough and obviously other clubs are following the same principles. As our season unfolds, with the majority of us fully vaccinated, it is hoped that you will feel completely confident to take part in our matches and competitions.

Winter League Covid and the weather devasted this competition and there is no option but to abandon it. The fee of £5 per head is still being held in Toffs accounts and the suggestion is to regard this as a credit against our next competition, which will be the Texas scramble. However, if anyone wishes to receive a refund, I’ll arrange for your bar card to be appropriately credited.

Toffs fixtures The fixture list is shown on both the Toffs and Club website although of course the early matches have been cancelled. These involved the home matches with South Herts and Berkhamsted, and away games at Hadley Wood, Harpenden (Hammons End) and Welwyn.   Consideration has been given to rearranging these matches but, with the number involved and our full programme, this is impractical.  So, with some Clubs, we will only have one meeting this year, with an appropriate sharing of costs for catering being applied.

Brookmans Park & Knebworth Permission has been given for us to play these home matches on 19th and 26th April, respectively.  As outside catering only will be permitted in that period, they will proceed on the basis of pre match coffee and post – match bacon rolls being served under the new marquee, these being consumed in tables of 4 to comply with the guidelines. The match fee for these matches will be £10, to be deducted from bar cards.  Please look out for the sign – up sheet for these matches on the Toffs website.

Texas Scramble Our traditional opening to the season scheduled for late February also fell by the wayside but it is intended to arrange it for Wednesday 12th May.  This was the date which was earmarked for our Invitation Day, but it was thought best to cancel that again this year given the restrictions which will still be in operation then. Please look out for the sign- up sheet, again on the Toffs website.

Toffs Eclectic This will be held in a similar fashion to last year, with a score being able to be submitted during a designated week. Full details will be published shortly. As previously announced, we have a new trophy generously donated by Michael Tryphonides, he having done a Brazilian with the previous one, as it were.

Toffs Singles   This knockout competition will be held during the summer and full details will be issued soon.

Website Richard Stell has done a tremendous job in getting the website updated and ready for the season. The intention is to use the website to facilitate the processing of selection for Toffs matches which will be very useful during the time of limited Clubhouse access. If you go into the home page, under Toffs fixtures 2021, you will see that Richard has shown the first two months fixtures and these will gradually be replaced as the season progresses.

Looking at the first fixture with Brookmans Park, as an example, you will see some basic info is shown and more is revealed if you Click for Details. You will then find further information including contact details for the Match Organiser (in this case, Ed Brown) together with some indication of the arrangements offered by that Club when they host us.

Assuming you wish to play in that match you should Click to Sign Up and enter your name to be considered for selection. The selected side will then be shown under the Team Sheet heading, with players also being notified individually, and asked to confirm, by e mail. The Match Report will be shown after the match under the appropriate heading.

Accounts Although financial transactions last year were minimal, I still thought I ought to produce a summary of income and expenditure, this having now been posted on our website under Account Summary.  A healthy position has been maintained which will facilitate future purchase of shirts and jumpers, etc.

Away Day The previously announced short trip to Hendon GC has been rolled over from last year and will take place on Monday 21st June.  Look out for further information on what should prove to be a truly momentous day involving full release from lockdown, on the longest day of the year on the birthday of the Toffs Captain.

Misdemeanours Given that we will all be a bit rusty on our return, I am anticipating a bumper collection of errors, calamities and accidents. Please don’t forget to let me know of such incidents to form part of the Toffs Awards at the End of Season.  Those from 2019 are archived on the website!
